Oister Reader 0.87.4 on Softpedia

Apparently, Softpedia found Oister Reader 0.87.4 and created a page specifically for the program. It's actually for the Windows version to be more specific. But that's still very exciting. Softpedia also awarded Oister Reader the Softpedia "100% FREE AWARD" which means that they tested the program in their labs and found it to be completely free of spyware, adware, and malware.

You can now download the Windows version of Oister Reader 0.87.4 and see it's new award by visiting the shiny new Softpedia page.

As far as I know I never submitted any links or anything, so I guess they found Oister Reader on their own. This was a nice surprise today. To the people at Softpedia, thank you.

New Oister Reader App Available

Oister Reader 0.87.4 is now available for download. Windows (32-bit) and Linux (64-bit Intel and 32-bit Intel) binaries are available. There’s also a new Android version called Oister Reader Mobile 0.87.4. You can find these downloads at the official Oister Reader project page on Google Code. The Android version is not available on Android Market yet, but it will be soon. If you’d like to install it on your Android device anyway, it should be fine but you do so at your own risk (you will probably have to change settings on your device to allow software from non-Market sources to be installed).

Feel free to take a look at the source code too, you can browse the code from within your web browser or you can download zip or tar.gz archives of the source code. The code for most recent versions (0.87.4) can be found in /trunk as well as in /branch/releases. If you’d like to contribute code, code reviews, bug reports, or suggestions, you need to join the project. Once you join, the project uses Subversion. Alternatively, if you’re not familiar with Subversion or just prefer not to use it, you can do most things (edit code, manage issues, etc) from within your web browser.

New Reader Coming Soon!

Oister Reader is going through some changes right now. A new, faster, better, more feature-rich version is on the way. And perhaps a name change to reflect all the fancy new features. But it will still build on the existing Oister Reader codebase (as tiny as it may be), so feel free to still use/modify/etc the current code.

OisterReader 0.86.1 Released

OisterReader 0.86.1 is now available for download on this site’s Downloads page or from the OisterReader project page. This release moves OisterReader out of beta, since it is pretty usable now. The application is still pre-1.0 though, so the it’s still relatively basic. But this release is so far much less buggy than any prior release and gets the job done pretty well.

If you’re interested in seeing a full list of changes, browsing the source or contributing to the source code, or if you’re interested in putting an Oister feed on your website/blog I encourage you to visit the OisterReader project page. Be sure to look at the OisterReader Project Wiki, especially the FAQ section.

OisterReader Beta 0.86 Released

OisterReader Beta 0.86 is now available for download on the Downloads page. This is a minor bugfix release that also includes much cleaner code. You can download the source code from the brand new OisterReader Project Page on Google Code. If you’re a developer you can also contribute code, submit bugs or other issues, or suggest changes. You can just browse the code but if you want to commit any changes you’ll need to use Subversion. In addition to the Downloads page on this site, you can also download the (compiled) desktop versions of OisterReader on the Google Code page.

Oister is Here

Today is the official launch of the Oister format. What’s the Oister format? It’s an XML format designed to list items (called “features”) in a way that can be consumed quickly and easily. Oister is similar to existing formats such as RSS and Atom but is different from those formats in a variety of ways. Oister is not meant to be a competing format to RSS and Atom, Oister is simply another way.

One of the many things that makes Oister unique is the concept of priority levels. In Oister, every item (or “feature”) is assigned one of five priority levels: Highest, High, Normal, Low, Lowest. Applications that read and display Oister files should take into account the priority level and place each feature according to it’s priority level rather than by when the feature was created. So a feature with a priority level of “highest” would be displayed more prominently than a feature with the priority level of “normal” which would in turn be displayed more prominently than a feature with the priority level of “low.”

The priority level is probably one of the most defining aspects of the Oister format, there are many more characteristics that make the Oister format one of a kind. Please use the navigation menu at the top of this website to learn more about Oister and how to create your own Oister formatted files. You can also download the OisterReader application for a variety of operating systems.

Start learning about Oister today and get ready to make the world yours!
